Current ExhibitionNeshama: a project of the Jewish Women Artists' Circle April 6 - June 15, 2008
In 2005, local Jewish women artists came together through a juried process to form an informal group who would study with Jewish scholars and create artworks around the theme of Jewish women and prayer. Their art was exhibited first at Adath Jeshurun Congregation in Minnetonka and later at the Jewish Community Center in St. Paul. The current seventeen members have created a new body of works centered around the concept of Neshama, which signifies the breath of life. A morning prayer proclaims: My God, the soul which you have placed within me is pure. According to Jewish tradition, each of us has a spark of the Creator within us and is also our connection with an Infinity greater than ourselves. The challenge for the artists is to portray what is quintessentially invisible through various ideas and visions including spirituality, intimacy, faith, life-force, breath-of-life, after-life, and so much more. My
God, The artists are diverse, ranging in age from their 20s to 70s, with Jewish backgrounds running the gamut from secular to conservative/orthodox. Some are well established artists; others are at early stages in their career. They work in varied media, both two- and three-dimensional; and most are inclined to experimentation with ideas and technique. These new works make their debut in this exhibition.

The Westminster Gallery
Art evokes a naturally occurring visual and emotional response that provokes thought and conversation, and informs our faith as we strive to be a telling presence in the city. The Westminster Gallery encompasses an exhibition space and permanent art collection which enhances the ministry of Word, Sacrament, and Music at Westminster Presbyterian Church in downtown Minneapolis. The Westminster Gallery features art through regularly changing exhibitions which evolve from the liturgical calendar and the world around us. The art exhibited incorporates the diversity within our congregation and community by featuring the work of regional artists and collectors as well as our own permanent collection.
The Westminster Gallery is located in the Heller Commons named for retired minister, the Rev. Elizabeth Downing Heller. |
